Right weight of the Gemstone

There is another very important area of gemstone prescription, which requires certain facts to be enunciated clearly. Classical astrologers have been using certain thumb rules of prescribing the appropriate weight of the gems. These astrologers rely upon the knowledge passed down to them from their teachers and they use it very effectively also. But even these prescriptions were devised on some principles. Many of these have been lost. Some of the prescriptions are empirical and are absolutely reliable and accurate.

Another area of sizing the gems for prescription purpose is on the basis of the degrees of the related planet in a sign where it is posited. But a planet can have 30th degree in a sign. Shall we prescribe a stone for that planet in carats in proportion to the degree in the sign? Similar issue arises when the degree of a planet in a sign is 1st. Using this system is impractical. The gems also work effectively beyond a threshold limit of their size. Below that threshold, they are good for ornamental purpose rather than astrological effects. Many people wear diamond rings with 9 diamonds studded, but they do not get any positive or negative effect. The reason being that the weight of all these diamonds is below the threshold and can not have any effect on the native.

This threshold value for all the stones except Diamond is 4.25 carats and above. The Diamond can be 1 carat and above to be effective. The table given below provides a thumb rule about the weights of various popularly used stones and the recommended metal for studding them. It is based on experience and has proved to be highly effective.

The above values of 4.25 carat is in keeping with the system of "SAVAYA" meaning system of one quarter. In this method any stone, which is prescribed, has to weigh in full weight plus one quarter as well. Diamond is the only stone, which is prescribed out of this savaya system. The system has empirical reasoning behind it and we must subscribe to it as it has been tested over centuries and the gemstones have given effective results in this system.

The conversion table for various weighing systems for gemstones is:

1 Gram = 5 Carats = 1000 Milligrams

200 Milligrams = 1 Carat or = 100 Cents

182 Milligrams = 1 Standard Ratti (Stones Ratti)

It is advisable if the stones are bought as per their weight in Carats as it is a standard term throughout the world. But in India, many times you get stones made following the system of Savaya and sold in their weight as Rattis. This should also be acceptable.
