PRECIOUS STONES AND GEMS IN RIGVEDA

The Rig Veda, which is the oldest book written by man on earth has mentioned the word Ratna (Gems), in its first sloka, called manthra. The Gems are such adored world over that people of all religions, languages and communities have always been enchanted by the marvelous utilities of them down the ages.

Irony is, the thought process on human afflictions and diseases in Ayurveda and Asrology is much profound and modern science will have to traverse long stages to equate that. According to Ayurveda and Astrology, reasons behind the human ailments are not considered to be the bacteria alone, but also the effects of the actions in one’s lifetime, which is called karmaja. It is said: “Poorvajanma Kritang paapong byadhi rupena baadhitaa”. That means the sins acquired from the previous lifetime reappear during the present life in form of diseases, chronic wounds or misfortune. The Ayurveda and Astrology give credence to curse, boon, blessings, prayers and wearing of gems or precious stones because of their innate invisible power which is often well acknowledged as divine actions. Hence, such prescriptions are recognized as remedies as, doing penance, mental or vocal repetition of mantras, rituals and rules, donations and pious activities during the lifetime. The tenets of these two disciplines are: If medicines through science could have cured all human afflictions then no body would have ever died in the society, and man would have become immortal today. However this is not the case.
